Sermon 113

Sermon 113 – Humility at the Feast

📖 Sermon 113 – Humility at the Feast

Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 14:7–11

Introduction

Jesus watches the behavior of guests at a feast and uses the occasion to teach a vital truth: “Whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” Pride seeks the highest place — but God honors the lowly in heart.

I. The Scene Observed by Jesus

A. Guests chose the chief rooms
They sought position and recognition.
Pride reveals itself in subtle ways.

B. Jesus uses a familiar custom
Banquets often included seats of honor.
Choosing the best place could lead to public humiliation.

C. He turns the scene into a spiritual lesson
Earthly behavior reflects the state of the heart.

II. The Teaching: Take the Lowest Room

A. Humility avoids shame
If a more honorable guest arrives, the proud will be asked to step down.

B. Humility invites honor
When the host says, “Friend, go up higher,” true honor is given — not grabbed.

C. God exalts the humble
He lifts up the meek and contrite.
He resists the proud.

III. The Spiritual Application

A. Pride is the root of much sin
It desires prominence, praise, and preeminence.

B. Humility is the posture of grace
The Gospel begins with self-abasement and ends with God’s exaltation.

C. Christ is the supreme example
He took the lowest place, and God highly exalted Him.

Conclusion

God sees beyond outward actions to the motives of the heart. Let us walk in humility, content with the lowest place, trusting God to bestow honor in His time. “For everyone that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”
