📖 Sermon 119 – The Lost Coin
Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 15:8–10
Introduction
Jesus continues the theme of joy over repentance with another parable, similar yet distinct. The lost sheep wanders; the lost coin is helpless. Both reveal God’s diligent grace and heaven’s rejoicing over every sinner restored.
A. The value of the coin
Likely part of a ten-piece bridal ornament —
precious sentimentally and financially.
B. The loss is keenly felt
So God regards the sinner as precious.
C. The sinner is lost within the house
A picture of those lost even amid religious privileges.
A. She lights a candle
Symbol of God’s Word shining into darkness.
B. She sweeps the house
Persistent, careful searching —
a picture of God’s earnest pursuit.
C. She seeks “diligently till she find it”
Grace perseveres until the lost is recovered.
A. She calls her friends and neighbors
Joy shared is joy increased.
B. “Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I had lost.”
The restoration brings delight.
C. “There is joy in the presence of the angels of God…”
Heaven’s joy centers on salvation.
Conclusion
The parable reveals God’s deep care for each sinner, His persistent pursuit, and the joy that fills heaven when one soul is restored. Let us rejoice with God, and value every soul as precious in His sight.
