📖 Sermon 121 – The Prodigal Son (Part 2)
Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 15:17–24
Introduction
The first part of the parable showed the son’s fall into misery. Now we see the miracle of awakening, the steps of repentance, and the overwhelming compassion of the Father. This is the Gospel’s heart: free grace to the returning sinner.
A. “He came to himself”
Sin is spiritual madness; repentance is sanity restored.
B. Reflection on the Father’s goodness
Even the hired servants have “bread enough and to spare.”
A contrast between the Father’s plenty
and the famine of a life away from Him.
C. Recognition of his own misery
“I perish with hunger.”
True awakening sees sin’s emptiness.
A. “I will arise and go to my father”
Repentance includes decisive action.
B. Confession prepared
“I have sinned against heaven and before thee.”
No excuses; no blaming; no softening.
C. Humble request
“Make me as one of thy hired servants.”
A broken spirit, content with the lowest place.
A. He sees him a great way off
The Father’s heart was waiting.
Mercy anticipates repentance.
B. He ran
A picture of eager, overflowing love.
C. He falls on his neck and kisses him
Forgiveness is immediate and tender.
D. The confession is spoken
But grace overflows before the son finishes.
A. The robe
Symbol of acceptance.
B. The ring
Symbol of sonship and authority.
C. The shoes
Symbol of dignity restored.
D. The feast
“Let us eat and be merry.”
Joy fills the household.
E. The declaration
“This my son was dead, and is alive again;
he was lost, and is found.”
Conclusion
Here is the Gospel’s glory: the Father receives the penitent sinner not with reluctance but with joy. Every step of repentance meets a greater step of divine mercy. Blessed are all who return to the Father.
