Sermon 127

Sermon 127 – Forgiveness, Faith, and the Duty of Servants

📖 Sermon 127 – Forgiveness, Faith, and the Duty of Servants

Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 17:1–10

Introduction

Jesus teaches His disciples three foundational lessons: the necessity of forgiving others, the power of even a small amount of faith, and the humility required of those who serve God. Each truth is vital for true discipleship.

I. The Warning Against Offenses

A. Offenses will come
A fallen world guarantees occasions of sin.

B. Severe judgment for causing others to stumble
“It were better… a millstone were hanged about his neck.” Christ takes harm to His little ones seriously.

C. The duty to rebuke
Love confronts sin, seeking restoration, not revenge.

II. The Call to Unlimited Forgiveness

A. “If thy brother trespass… rebuke him”
Correction aims at repentance.

B. “If he repent, forgive him”
Even repeated sin must be met with repeated forgiveness.

C. Seven times in a day
A symbolic number representing continual pardon. Forgiveness reflects the heart of Christ.

III. The Lesson on Faith

A. The apostles cry, “Increase our faith”
They sense the difficulty of forgiveness.

B. Faith the size of a mustard seed
True faith, however small, connects to God’s power.

C. “Be thou plucked up… be thou planted in the sea”
Hyperbolic imagery showing nothing is impossible with God.

IV. The Parable of the Unprofitable Servants

A. Servants do not expect thanks for duty
A servant plows, feeds cattle, and then serves the master his meal.

B. “We have done that which was our duty to do”
Obedience is not a ground of merit, but an expression of gratitude.

C. Humility is essential
Christ rejects all boasting; He calls His disciples to lowliness of mind.

Conclusion

This passage confronts us with three great responsibilities: forgive freely, trust deeply, and serve humbly. These marks identify the true disciple, reflecting the character of Christ Himself.
