Sermon 142

Sermon 142 – Cleansing the Temple

📖 Sermon 142 – Cleansing the Temple

Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 19:45–48

Introduction

Jesus enters the temple and finds it filled with merchants, money changers, and noisy commerce. He drives them out, restoring the house of God to its intended purpose — a house of prayer. This passage reveals His zeal for true worship.

I. The Temple Profaned

A. “He went into the temple”
The place appointed for God’s presence.

B. “He began to cast out them that sold therein”
The sacred space had become a marketplace.

C. Greed had corrupted worship
The leaders permitted it for profit.

II. Christ’s Righteous Indignation

A. “It is written…”
He appeals to Scripture.

B. “My house is the house of prayer”
God’s design for His sanctuary.

C. “But ye have made it a den of thieves”
A stern accusation against religious corruption.

III. Christ Restores True Worship

A. “He taught daily in the temple”
The Word replaces the noise of commerce.

B. The people were attentive to hear Him
Hearts long neglected now awakened.

C. The leaders sought to destroy Him
His authority threatened their power.

Conclusion

Christ’s cleansing of the temple teaches the holiness of God’s house and the necessity of pure worship. He still calls His people to cast out every corruption and restore the heart’s sanctuary to prayer, reverence, and devotion.
