📖 Sermon 149 – The Widow’s Mite
Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 21:1–4
Introduction
Jesus watches as people cast their offerings into the treasury. Many rich give out of their abundance, but a poor widow casts in two mites — all that she had. Christ declares that her gift, though small in amount, was greater than them all. This passage reveals heaven’s measure of giving.
A. Jesus “looked up”
He observes not merely the amount given
but the heart behind it.
B. The rich cast in “much”
Large offerings that impressed men
but cost them little.
C. A certain poor widow
Unknown, unnoticed by others —
but not by Christ.
A. Two mites
The smallest coins in circulation —
yet they were all she possessed.
B. She “cast in all her living”
A gift marked by sacrifice,
faith, and love.
C. True giving is measured not by amount but by cost
A. “She hath cast in more than they all”
Heaven’s arithmetic differs
from earth’s.
B. The rich gave of their abundance
Large gifts, little sacrifice.
C. She gave “all the living that she had”
Her whole heart accompanied her gift.
Conclusion
The widow teaches us that true giving is sacrificial, humble, and rooted in trust. God measures the heart, not the sum. Let us give ourselves first to the Lord, and then all else will follow in love.
