📖 Sermon 158 – The Last Supper

Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 22:14–18

Introduction

The hour has come. Jesus sits down with His apostles to eat the Passover — the final Passover before His death, the last before He fulfills its deepest meaning. In these verses we see His heartfelt desire, the transition from old covenant to new, and the certainty of His coming kingdom.

I. The Earnest Desire of Christ

A. “With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you”
A double expression of longing — revealing the deep emotion of the Savior’s heart.

B. He treasures fellowship with His disciples
Even in the shadow of the cross.

C. The Passover points directly to His coming sacrifice

II. The Last Passover Before His Suffering

A. “Before I suffer”
The Lamb of God is about to be slain.

B. He fulfills what the Passover signified
Deliverance through blood.

C. The old ceremonial system reaches its completion

III. The Transition Toward the Kingdom

A. “I will not any more eat thereof…”
This is the final Passover until all is fulfilled.

B. “Until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God”
The feast finds its completion in Christ’s redeeming work.

C. A future fellowship awaits when the kingdom is fully revealed

IV. The Cup of Covenant Expectation

A. He takes the cup and gives thanks
Perfect gratitude even in suffering.

B. “Take this, and divide it among yourselves”
Shared fellowship among believers.

C. “I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God shall come”
A pledge of future joy in the completed reign of Christ.

Conclusion

This passage draws our hearts to the love of Christ, the meaning of His sacrifice, and the hope of His kingdom. He longed to share this meal because it marked the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan. Let us treasure His fellowship, trust His sacrifice, and look with joy toward the day when we shall feast with Him in His Father’s kingdom.
