📖 Sermon 164 – Gethsemane

Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 22:39–46

Introduction

Jesus enters the garden of Gethsemane with His disciples. Here, in solemn loneliness, He faces the full weight of the suffering that lies before Him. In these verses we behold His agony, His prayer, and His perfect submission to the Father’s will.

I. The Place of Prayer

A. “He came out, and went as He was wont”
Gethsemane was His familiar place for prayer.

B. “His disciples also followed Him”
Though they do not yet understand the hour’s solemnity.

C. Christ seeks the Father in the moment of deepest trial

II. The Command to Watch and Pray

A. “Pray that ye enter not into temptation.”
A warning given out of love.

B. Spiritual danger is near, though unseen.

C. Prayer is the believer’s safeguard in the hour of testing

III. The Agony of the Savior

A. “He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast”
A picture of His lonely suffering.

B. “He kneeled down and prayed”
The Son of God in perfect humility.

C. “Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from Me”
The depth of His agony — yet without sin.

D. “Nevertheless not My will, but Thine, be done.”
Perfect submission in perfect obedience.

E. “There appeared an angel… strengthening Him.”
Heaven ministers to the suffering Savior.

F. “His sweat was as it were great drops of blood”
A mystery of anguish beyond human comprehension.

IV. The Sleeping Disciples

A. “He found them sleeping for sorrow”
Weakness overwhelms them.

B. “Why sleep ye? Rise and pray”
A tender rebuke.

C. Even in His agony, He cares for their souls

Conclusion

In Gethsemane we behold the holy Son of God bowing beneath the weight of sin and judgment for us. His agony reveals the cost of our redemption, and His submission shows the perfection of His obedience. Let us watch and pray, trusting Him who suffered that we might live.
