📖 Sermon 178 — Deuteronomy 6:10–15
Date: May 31, 1953
Text: Deuteronomy 6:10–15
Preacher: G. S. Kok
Subject: Remember Jehovah
INTRODUCTION
Forty years ago the Rev. D. Vander Werp preached to this congregation on the text Jeremiah 6:16:
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.
With those instructions you began your existence as a congregation.
Now you have existed forty years and can look back over the years. Those who have followed the instructions given, and who have kept the good way to which they were directed by the preaching of the Word and by the Holy Spirit, have found and are finding rest for their souls. Some have already entered the eternal rest, and others are on the way.
Now we stand at the beginning of another mile or another decade. What would be an appropriate message to take along on this new period of our journey through life?
The same text would do very well, but instead we use the words which Moses spoke to Israel as they, after forty years of wandering, were about to enter the land of Canaan.
The substance of these words is summed up in the admonition: Remember Jehovah.
A. He is the one and only God
1. All other gods are idols and vanity.
2. He alone is worthy to be honored and adored.
B. He is the unchangeable covenant-keeping God
1. I AM THAT I AM.
2. He never forgets His promises.
3. He is ever faithful.
C. He is your God
1. He chose you to be His people.
2. He claimed you for Himself and gave Himself for you.
3. This is your special privilege.
4. This is entirely by grace; not because you were greater or better than others.
A. Israel was reminded that Jehovah had given them the land of Canaan.
B. Israel had been delivered from the bondage of Egypt.
C. As a congregation
1. Physically and materially, we have been blessed — now a large congregation and a splendid sanctuary.
2. Spiritually, we have lacked nothing. The Lord has showered us with His mercies, sustained and nourished us, and given rest and peace unto our souls.
D. Remember to give Him thanks, for His lovingkindness endures forever.
A. Fear Him.
B. Serve Him.
C. Swear by His Name.
D. Do not go after other gods.
A. As a faithful God He cannot condone an unfaithful people.
B. His perfect love demands undivided love from those He loves.
C. Beware lest you forget Him
1. Lest His anger be kindled against you.
2. And He destroy thee from off the face of the earth.
CONCLUSION
History shows that Israel did not heed these instructions. Because of their disloyalty God brought His judgments upon them again and again. Finally, because they continued to disregard God’s Word, He destroyed them as a nation.
God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Let us remember His will and be faithful to Him, lest we also be destroyed by His anger.
