📖 SERMON 188 — Deuteronomy 6:10–15
Date: May 31, 1953
Text: Deuteronomy 6:10–15
Preacher: Rev. G. S. Kok
Subject: Remember Jehovah
INTRODUCTION
Forty years ago the Rev. D. Vander Werp preached to this congregation from Jeremiah 6:16:
“Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.”
With those instructions you began your existence as a congregation. Now forty years have passed. Those who have followed that instruction and have kept the “good way,” as directed by the preaching of the Word and by the Holy Spirit, have found rest for their souls. Some have already entered the eternal rest; others are still on the way.
Now, as we stand at the beginning of another mile, another decade, what is the appropriate message to take with us? Moses gives us the answer. The substance of his words is: Remember Jehovah.
A. He is the one and only God
1. All other gods are idols and vanity.
2. He alone is worthy to be honored and adored.
B. He is the unchangeable, covenant-keeping God
1. “I AM THAT I AM.”
2. He never forgets His promises.
3. He is eternally faithful.
C. He is your God
1. He chose you to be His people.
2. He claimed you for Himself and gave Himself for you.
3. This is your special privilege.
4. Not because of merit on your part—you were not greater or better than others. It is entirely grace.
A. Israel was reminded that Jehovah gave them the land of Canaan.
B. Israel was delivered from bondage in Egypt.
C. As a congregation, remember
1. Physical and material blessings
a. Now a large congregation
b. A splendid sanctuary
c. Prosperity through the years
2. Spiritual blessings
a. Nothing lacking in spiritual nourishment
b. God has showered mercies upon you
c. He has continually sustained you
d. He has given rest and peace unto your souls
D. Remember and give thanks for His lovingkindness which endureth forever.
A. Fear Him.
B. Serve Him.
C. Swear by His name.
D. Do not go after other gods.
A. A faithful God cannot condone an unfaithful people.
B. His perfect love demands undivided love from those whom He loves.
C. Beware lest you forget Him
1. Lest His anger be kindled against you.
2. “And He destroy thee from off the face of the earth.”
CONCLUSION
Israel did not heed these warnings of Moses. Because of their disloyalty, God brought judgments upon them again and again. And when they continued to disregard God’s Word, God destroyed them as a nation.
God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Let us remember His will and be faithful to Him, lest we also be destroyed by His anger.
