📖 SERMON 199 — REMEMBER JEHOVAH
Preacher: (not listed)
Date: May 31, 1953
Text: Deuteronomy 6:10–15
Subject: REMEMBER JEHOVAH
INTRODUCTION:
Forty years ago the Rev. D. Vander Werp preached to this congregation on Jeremiah 6:16:
“Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.”
With those instructions this congregation began its existence.
Now, after forty years, you may look back. Those who followed those instructions — who kept the good way to which they were directed by the preaching of the Word and by the Holy Spirit — have found rest for their souls.
Some have already entered eternal rest; others are on their way.
Now we stand at the beginning of another mile, another decade. What message is appropriate as we continue our journey?
The words of Moses to Israel as they stood ready to enter Canaan contain the answer:
REMEMBER JEHOVAH.
A. He is the one and only God.
1. All other gods are idols and vanity.
2. He alone is worthy of honor and adoration.
B. He is the unchangeable covenant-keeping God.
1. “I AM THAT I AM.”
2. He never forgets His promises.
3. He is eternally faithful.
C. He is your God.
1. He chose you to be His people.
2. He claimed you for Himself and gave Himself for you.
3. This is your privilege.
4. Not because you are better or greater than others — it is entirely by grace.
A. Israel was reminded that Jehovah had given them the land of Canaan.
B. He had delivered them from the bondage of Egypt.
C. As a congregation:
1. Physically and materially:
You have been blessed.
A large congregation and a splendid sanctuary.
2. Spiritually:
You have lacked nothing.
The Lord has showered you with mercies, sustained and nourished you, and given rest and peace to your souls.
D. Therefore remember — and give Him thanks — for His lovingkindness which endures forever.
A. Fear Him.
B. Serve Him.
C. Swear by His name.
D. Do not go after other gods.
A. A faithful God cannot condone an unfaithful people.
B. His perfect love demands undivided love in return.
C. Beware lest you forget Him.
1. Lest His anger be kindled against you.
2. “And He destroy thee from off the face of the earth.”
CONCLUSION:
Israel did not heed Moses’ instructions. Because they became disloyal, God brought judgments again and again. And when they persisted, God finally destroyed them as a nation.
God is the same today. Let us remember His will and be faithful lest we too be destroyed by His anger.
