Sermon 203

SERMON 203 — A SECURE PEOPLE

📖 SERMON 203 — A SECURE PEOPLE

Preacher: Rev. G. S. Kok
Date: January 1, 1951
Text: Psalm 91:1–4
Subject: A SECURE PEOPLE

INTRODUCTION:

Every day we are reminded that things do not look very good for the year 1951. Many voices warn of great danger ahead. It almost seems the only subject people want to talk or write about is danger.

And there is real reason to believe danger lies ahead.

People naturally grow deeply concerned about safety—for themselves and for their families. They ask:

Is there any possible escape?
Is there any way to be secure amid atomic warfare, communistic oppression, economic collapse?

The Psalmist declares that perfect safety and perfect security truly exist—and that some people already possess it.

I. THEIR IDENTITY

A. They are ordinary people.
1. Not just the rich.
2. Not only the learned.

B. They are people of all nationalities.
1. Their safety is not tied to citizenship in any earthly nation.
2. They form an international people.

C. They dwell in a “secret place.”
1. Unknown to enemies.
2. A place belonging to the Most High.
3. The very presence of the supreme Ruler.
4. And this is their home:
   — Not a storm cellar.
   — Not a temporary emergency shelter.
   — But a permanent dwelling.

II. HOW DO THEY OBTAIN THIS SECURITY?

A. To dwell in the secret place of the Most High means:
1. To be under His protecting care.
2. To be under the shadow of the Almighty.

B. They obtain it by trusting God.
1. Not merely saying, “I trust in God.”
2. But actually placing themselves in His keeping:
Like a mother placing her baby with a trusted friend.
Like placing valuables in a vault.
They entrust themselves to Jehovah completely.
3. A full surrender to His care and keeping.

C. Taking refuge in Jehovah.
1. The eternally faithful covenant God.
2. “He is my refuge and my fortress.”

D. Confidence in the Word of God.
1. Trusting His promises.
2. Assured of His absolute dependability.

III. JUST HOW SECURE ARE THEY?

A. Does this mean no physical harm will ever come?
1. Some claim believers never suffer violent death.
2. But Scripture and history show many faithful saints have died violently.
3. If a bomb fell on this church, would it strike only unbelievers?
4. The righteous face the common dangers of life—and often special dangers because they are Christians, as the martyrs prove.

B. It means that all things work together for their good.

C. Nothing can separate them from the love of God.
