Sermon 213

SERMON 213 — Remember Jehovah

📖 SERMON 213 — REMEMBER JEHOVAH

Preacher: G. S. Kok
Date: May 31, 1953
Text: Deuteronomy 6:10–15
Title: Remember Jehovah

INTRODUCTION

Forty years ago the Rev. D. Vander Werp preached to this congregation from Jeremiah 6:16: “Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths…” With that instruction, this congregation began its existence.

Now forty years have passed. Those who followed the good way have found rest for their souls. Some have already entered eternal rest; others are still on the way.

Now we stand at the beginning of yet another period in life. What message is appropriate for this new milestone?

Moses’ words to Israel—spoken just before they entered Canaan after forty years of wandering—are equally fitting for us.

Their essence is: Remember Jehovah.

SUBJECT: REMEMBER JEHOVAH
I. REMEMBER WHO HE IS

A. He is the one and only God

1. All other gods are idols, vanity.
2. He alone is worthy of honor and adoration.

B. The unchangeable, covenant-keeping God

1. “I AM THAT I AM.”
2. He never forgets His promises.
3. He is eternally faithful.

C. He is your God

1. He chose you to be His people.
2. He claimed you for Himself and gave Himself for you.
3. This is your privilege.
4. Not because of your merit—Israel was not greater or better than others.

II. REMEMBER WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR YOU

A. Israel must remember Jehovah gave them the land of Canaan.

B. Israel had been delivered from the bondage of Egypt.

C. As a congregation:

1. Physically and materially blessed—now a large congregation with a splendid sanctuary.
2. Spiritually blessed—never lacking the Word, sustained and nourished by His mercies, given rest and peace.

D. Therefore: Remember, and give thanks for His lovingkindness which endures forever.

III. REMEMBER TO BE FAITHFUL TO HIM

A. Fear Him.
B. Serve Him.
C. Swear by His name.
D. Do not go after other gods.

IV. REMEMBER HE IS A JEALOUS GOD

A. A faithful God cannot condone an unfaithful people.
B. His perfect love demands undivided love from His own.
C. Beware lest you forget Him:

1. Lest His anger be kindled against you.
2. “And He destroy thee from off the face of the earth.”

CONCLUSION

Israel did not heed Moses’ instruction. Because they became disloyal, God brought judgments upon them again and again. Eventually He destroyed them as a nation.

God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Let us remember His will and remain faithful, lest we also be destroyed by His anger.
