Preacher: G. S. Kok
INTRODUCTION
In this final section of Revelation, the Lord seals the prophecy with a solemn warning, a gracious invitation, and a closing benediction. These verses press upon us the seriousness of this book and the certainty of its promises and judgments.
I. A SOLEMN WARNING (vv. 18–19)
A. Warning against adding to God’s words
1. Whoever adds to this prophecy will receive the plagues written in this book.
2. This applies specifically to Revelation and in principle to all Scripture.
3. Men may not improve, adjust, or supplement the Word of God.
4. God’s Word is complete and perfect.
B. Warning against taking away from God’s words
1. Whoever removes from this prophecy will have his part taken out of the book of life.
2. To subtract from God’s Word is to reject His truth.
3. Such a person shows he does not belong to Christ’s redeemed.
4. God will not tolerate tampering with His revelation.
C. The purpose of the warning
1. To preserve the purity of Scripture.
2. To protect God’s people from deception.
3. To remind us of the divine origin and authority of the Bible.
4. To teach that salvation depends on believing God’s Word as given.
II. A JOYOUS AFFIRMATION OF CHRIST’S RETURN (v. 20)
A. Christ declares, Surely I come quickly
1. Surely indicates certainty.
2. Quickly means suddenly and unexpectedly.
3. His return is the hope of the Church.
4. Revelation continually points to this goal.
B. The Church responds, Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus
1. The believer agrees: Amen.
2. The believer longs: Come, Lord Jesus.
3. A living church anticipates His return with joy.
4. The posture of faith is readiness, expectation, and longing.
III. A FINAL BENEDICTION (v. 21)
A. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all
1. Grace is the foundation of salvation.
2. Grace is the believer’s strength.
3. Grace comforts the suffering church.
4. Grace is the final word of Scripture.
B. The closing Amen
1. The Church responds in faith and agreement.
2. The Bible ends in assurance, not fear.
3. God’s promises are sure and trustworthy.
CONCLUSION
Revelation closes not with terror but with grace, not with uncertainty but with hope. It calls us to honor God’s Word, to expect Christ’s return, and to rest in divine grace. The final message of Scripture is, Surely I come quickly. The final prayer of the Church is, Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
