SERMON 224 – A LIVING CHURCH
Text: 1 Thessalonians 1:1–10
Date in manuscript: October 12, 1947
Preacher: G. S. Kok
INTRODUCTION
Paul spent only a short time in Thessalonica before persecution forced him to flee, yet the church he founded there became strong, vibrant, missionary-minded, and spiritually healthy. In this chapter Paul describes the qualities that make a church truly alive.
I. A LIVING CHURCH IS REMEMBERED WITH GRATITUDE (vv. 1–3)
A. Remembered by the men who labored among them
1. Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy rejoice in this congregation.
2. They address the church as in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. They desire for her grace and peace, the highest blessings Christ gives.
B. Remembered continually in thanksgiving and prayer
1. Paul thanks God for them because their life is from God.
2. He remembers their work of faith, their labor of love, and their patience of hope in Christ. These three graces bear visible fruit.
II. A LIVING CHURCH IS KNOWN TO BE AN ELECT CHURCH (vv. 4–5)
A. Paul declares that he knows their election
1. They were more than an outward Christian society.
2. They were chosen of God, the true spiritual church.
3. A living church is always an elect church; spiritual life comes from sovereign grace.
B. How Paul knew they were elect
1. How the gospel came to them: Not in word only but in power, in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance.
2. How they received the gospel: They welcomed it into their hearts, believed it deeply, and were transformed.
3. The same signs by which a believer knows he is elect: He receives the gospel, trusts Christ, and bears fruit.
III. A LIVING CHURCH IS A WITNESSING CHURCH (vv. 6–9)
A. The gospel transformed their lives
1. They became imitators of the Lord and of Paul.
2. They received the Word with joy of the Holy Ghost.
3. They suffered persecution but remained joyful. A living church shines brightest in dark times.
B. Their faith sounded out everywhere
1. Their testimony spread through Macedonia and Achaia.
2. Sounded out means echoed, resounded, could not be contained.
3. Their missionary zeal was so great that Paul said, We need not speak anything.
C. Their witness was unmistakable
1. They turned to God from idols.
2. They served the living and true God.
3. Their conversion became known everywhere. This is revival language: transformation that cannot be hidden.
IV. A LIVING CHURCH AWAITS JESUS’ RETURN (v. 10)
A. A vital mark of spiritual life
1. The church keeps her eyes fixed on heaven.
2. She eagerly anticipates Christ’s return.
3. Her hope is not earthly prosperity but the coming King.
B. This expectation gives her strength
1. It inspires faithfulness under suffering.
2. It encourages holiness and self-denial.
3. It fuels missionary zeal, wanting others ready for His return.
C. Her faith rests in the risen Savior
1. Jesus, whom God raised from the dead.
2. He delivers us from the wrath to come.
3. He is the foundation of her hope and life.
CONCLUSION
A living church is remembered with thanksgiving, known to be elect, witnessing boldly, and waiting eagerly for Jesus. A living church consists of living members; a congregation full of spiritual corpses cannot be alive. Are you alive in Christ?
