Subject: Walking in Christ

I. OF WHOM THIS IS EXPECTED

A. Paul comes with an admonition to walk in Christ
1. This is a command.
2. He expects them to do it.
3. It is not a statement of what they do, but of what they must do.

B. Not everybody
1. Paul does not expect all people to walk in Christ.
2. Unbelievers and those who have not heard of Christ are not expected to walk in Christ.

C. They who have received Christ
1. He uses the word as, seeing that ye have received.
2. Christ has been imparted to them and they accepted Him.
  a. By the preaching Christ was brought to them.
  b. When they believed the gospel they accepted Christ who was given to them.
  c. Even as portrayed in the Lord’s Supper:
3. The bread and wine symbolizing the broken body and poured-out blood are given to us.
4. We accept the elements and eat and drink them, indicating that we accept Christ as Saviour.
5. Who are therefore in Christ.
  a. They who receive Christ are one with Him.
  b. They are believers in Christ.
  c. They confess Christ as Saviour.
6. By the grace of God.
  a. God gave His only begotten Son.
  b. God gave the faith to accept Christ.
  c. God sent the gospel to be preached.
  d. Without cost or compulsion.

II. WHAT THIS IMPLIES

A. What does walk mean
1. Sometimes it denotes one’s conduct or life. They who have received Christ must live in Christ, leading a Christlike life flowing from true faith.
2. It can mean making progress, growing.

B. Rooted in Christ
1. Laying ever stronger hold on Christ by learning to understand and love Him.
2. Building on the Rock by doing the works of faith.
3. So that every wind of doctrine will not overthrow them.
4. This is internal growth, like roots growing unseen.

C. Building up in Christ
1. This is externally visible.
2. Life becoming increasingly Christ-centered.

D. Becoming established in the faith
1. Firm in conviction.
2. Assured of the promises.
3. Holding fast that which ye were taught. To have a firm faith one must be instructed; he that will not receive instruction will not have a firm faith.

E. Abounding in thanksgiving
1. This is the fruit of growth.
2. This must be the motive for all building and growing.
3. This is the mark of Christian faith.
4. Life must be a life of gratitude shown in prayer, offering, speech, and deeds.

CONCLUSION

You have received Christ. You must walk in Christ.
