π Sermon 100 – Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer
Date: 1966
Text: Luke 11:1–13
Introduction
When Jesus finished praying, one of His disciples came to Him with a request: “Lord, teach us to pray.” Prayer must be learned — and Jesus responds by giving both a model prayer and instructions about the spirit of prayer.
Main Points
A. “Our Father which art in heaven”
Prayer begins with God — His glory, His name, His kingdom.
We pray as children to a loving Father.
B. “Hallowed be Thy name”
His honor and holiness come first.
C. “Thy kingdom come”
We long for His rule in our hearts and in the world.
D. “Give us day by day our daily bread”
We depend on God for every need.
E. “Forgive us our sins”
We confess our sins continually.
We forgive others because we have been forgiven.
F. “Lead us not into temptation”
We pray for protection from evil and for strength to resist.
A. A man seeks bread at midnight
The request is urgent and inconvenient,
yet persistence prevails.
B. Jesus teaches perseverance
“Ask… seek… knock.”
Keep praying — continue in faith.
C. God is far more willing to bless
If a reluctant friend will answer at midnight,
how much more your heavenly Father?
A. Earthly fathers give good gifts
Bread, fish, eggs — never harmful substitutes.
B. “How much more shall your heavenly Father give…?”
He delights to bless His children.
C. The greatest gift: the Holy Spirit
God gives not merely things — but Himself.
His Spirit empowers, comforts, guides, and sanctifies.
Conclusion
Prayer is learned at the feet of Jesus. Follow His pattern. Persevere in asking. Trust the Father’s generous heart. He gives good gifts — and the greatest of all is His Spirit.
