Sermon 101

Sermon 101 – Christ’s Warning About Unbelief

📖 Sermon 101 – Christ’s Warning About Unbelief

Date: 1969
Text: Luke 11:29–32

Introduction

When the crowds gathered around Jesus and demanded a sign, He condemned their spirit as an evil one. They wanted proof — not faith. But Jesus teaches that unbelief is not cured by signs, for He Himself is God’s greatest sign.

I. A Wicked Generation Seeks a Sign

A. Their demand reveals unbelief
They had seen His works already.
They had heard His teaching.
Yet they remained unmoved, asking for something more.

B. Signs cannot create faith
Miracles may astonish, but they do not soften the heart.
Israel had seen mighty works in the wilderness yet perished in unbelief.

C. Their request dishonored Christ
They treated the Son of God as though His word were not enough.

II. The Sign of Jonah

A. Jonah was a sign to Nineveh
Three days in the fish foreshadowed Christ’s burial.
His preaching called the city to repentance.

B. Christ is the greater Jonah
He is greater in His person — the eternal Son.
Greater in His message — the Gospel of salvation.
Greater in His work — His death and resurrection.

C. The men of Nineveh will condemn unbelief
They repented at Jonah’s preaching.
But Christ’s hearers remained hardened.

III. The Queen of the South

A. She sought wisdom
She traveled far to hear Solomon.

B. Christ is greater than Solomon
He is wisdom incarnate.
His words bring life and truth.

C. Her example rebukes unbelief
If she responded to Solomon, how much more should we respond to Christ?

Conclusion

Christ is God’s final and perfect sign. Unbelief is not due to insufficient evidence but to a hardened heart. Let us hear Him, repent, and receive the wisdom and grace that He freely offers.
