Sermon 102

Sermon 102 – The Parable of the Rich Fool

📖 Sermon 102 – The Parable of the Rich Fool

Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 12:13–21

Introduction

A man in the crowd asked Jesus to settle a dispute about an inheritance. But Jesus refused to be drawn into earthly quarrels and instead warned against covetousness. He then told the parable of the rich fool to teach the danger of trusting in earthly riches while neglecting God.

I. The Snare of Covetousness

A. A lawful request with an unlawful spirit
The man wanted his share of the inheritance, but his heart was set on possessions.

B. Jesus sees deeper
He warns, “Take heed… a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”

C. Covetousness is idolatry
It turns the heart from God to earthly gain.

II. The Prosperity of the Rich Man

A. His land brought forth plentifully
His prosperity was a gift from God, though he did not acknowledge it.

B. His concern was storage, not stewardship
“What shall I do? I have no room where to bestow my fruits.”
He saw wealth as his own achievement.

C. His solution was self-centered
“I will pull down my barns and build greater.”
He thought only of himself and his comfort.

III. God’s Judgment on the Fool

A. The divine interruption
“Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee.” God demands his life — suddenly and unexpectedly.

B. The futility of earthly plans
“Then whose shall those things be?” Earthly wealth cannot save the soul.

C. The true measure of a person
“So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” To be rich toward God is to trust Him, obey Him, and serve Him.

Conclusion

The parable teaches the emptiness of earthly riches without God. Life is uncertain. Judgment is certain. Let us seek treasure in heaven and live daily in faith and humility before the God who alone gives life and peace.
