π Sermon 105 – The Lord’s Coming with Fire
Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 12:49–53
Introduction
Jesus speaks here of fire, baptism, and division — solemn themes that reveal the cost and the power of His coming. He did not come merely to bring comfort but to expose the heart, purify His people, and divide between belief and unbelief.
A. A symbol of judgment
God’s holiness confronts human sin.
Christ’s coming forces a crisis.
B. A symbol of purification
Fire refines gold; Christ refines His church.
He burns away hypocrisy and self-righteousness.
C. A symbol of spiritual power
Pentecost came with tongues of fire.
The Gospel spreads with divine flame.
A. His suffering and death
This “baptism” is the cross —
a plunge into judgment for our sins.
B. His deep distress until it is accomplished
He longed for the work of redemption to be completed.
His agony reveals both His humanity and His devotion to His Father’s will.
C. Salvation flows from His finished work
The fire of judgment falls on Him so grace may fall on us.
A. Not peace at any price
Truth divides where hearts are opposed to Him.
B. Households split over loyalty to Christ
Father against son, mother against daughter —
not because Christ desires discord,
but because hearts respond differently to Him.
C. The division exposes the true condition of the heart
Those who love Him stand on one side;
those who reject Him stand on the other.
Conclusion
Christ came not to leave the world as it is, but to purify, redeem, and divide. His fire still burns — to judge sin, to refine faith, and to empower His people. Let us stand with Him, embrace His cross, and walk boldly in the light of His truth.
