Sermon 104

Sermon 104 – The Duty of Watchfulness

📖 Sermon 104 – The Duty of Watchfulness

Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 12:35–48

Introduction

Jesus teaches His disciples that they must be ready for His coming. The future belongs to God, and His people must live in expectation, faithfulness, and spiritual alertness. This passage contains both encouragement and solemn warning.

I. Be Ready for the Master’s Return

A. “Let your loins be girded about”
This means readiness for service.
A servant must be prepared to act without delay.

B. “And your lights burning”
Spiritual vigilance — the heart must remain awake and bright.
Faith is not passive; it watches.

C. Like servants waiting for their lord
They listen for His knock.
They desire His return.
They respond immediately when He comes.

II. The Blessedness of the Watching Servant

A. The Master serves them
An astonishing promise: “He shall gird Himself… and will come forth and serve them.”
Christ rewards faithful watchers with fellowship and honor.

B. His coming is certain, though its time is unknown
It may be in the second watch or the third.
The uncertainty calls for constant readiness.

C. Faithfulness is rewarded
Those found watching receive blessing beyond measure.

III. A Warning to the Unfaithful Servant

A. The danger of delay
“If that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming…”
He begins to abuse his authority and indulge his flesh.

B. Judgment comes suddenly
The lord of that servant appears unexpectedly and appoints him his portion “with the unbelievers.”

C. Responsibility measured by knowledge
“To whom much is given, much shall be required.”
Greater privilege brings greater accountability.

Conclusion

Christ’s people must live in watchfulness. Not in fear, but in faith; not in speculation, but in readiness; not in carelessness, but in devotion. Blessed are those servants whom the Lord shall find watching when He comes.
