📖 Sermon 108 – The Healing of the Bent Woman

Introduction
Jesus heals a woman bowed together for eighteen long years. Her condition was physical, yet Scripture reveals that a spirit of infirmity had bound her. This miracle displays Christ’s compassion, His authority over Satan, and the shame of hypocritical religion.
A. Eighteen years of bondage
She could in no wise lift herself up.
Her suffering was long and severe.
B. Bound by Satan
Her affliction had a spiritual cause.
Satan oppresses, burdens, and deforms.
C. Yet she continued attending the synagogue
Suffering did not drive her from the means of grace.
A. Jesus sees her
He notices the lowly and the afflicted.
B. He calls her to Himself
His grace begins with His initiative — not her ability.
C. He speaks healing
“Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.”
His word carries divine authority.
D. He lays His hands on her
A touch of mercy, restoring what was broken.
E. Immediate healing
She glorifies God — the natural response to grace.
A. Indignant because the healing occurred on the Sabbath
He ignored the miracle and focused on his rules.
B. Jesus exposes his hypocrisy
He would loose an ox or donkey on the Sabbath,
yet begrudged this woman’s deliverance.
C. The shame of legalism
False religion cares more for regulations
than for mercy and the glory of God.
A. His adversaries are ashamed
Truth silences hypocrisy.
B. The people rejoice
“Glorified all the glorious things done by Him.”
C. Satan’s bondage is broken
Christ reveals Himself as the liberating Lord
