📖 Sermon 109 – The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven
Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 13:18–21
Introduction
Jesus presents two brief parables describing the nature of the Kingdom of God. Though small in its beginnings, the Kingdom grows with divine power and transforms everything it touches. These parables provide encouragement, perspective, and hope.
A. The smallest of seeds
The Kingdom begins in weakness and humility —
a baby in Bethlehem, a small band of disciples,
simple preaching, and ordinary vessels.
B. It grows into a great tree
The Gospel spreads, nations are discipled,
and the Kingdom provides shelter and blessing.
C. Birds lodging in the branches
A picture of the wide reach of Christ’s reign,
drawing all kinds of people under His grace.
A. Hidden in three measures of meal
The Kingdom works quietly and inwardly,
often unnoticed at first.
B. Its influence is transforming
Leaven changes the whole lump —
so the Gospel changes hearts, homes, nations, and cultures.
C. It works until all is leavened
The Kingdom’s growth is inevitable and complete.
Christ will accomplish all His purpose.
A. Do not despise small beginnings
God often starts His greatest works in humble ways.
B. The Kingdom grows by divine power
Not by human strength but by the Spirit of God.
C. The Gospel transforms everything it touches
Its influence is deep, pervasive, and unstoppable.
Conclusion
These parables assure us that the Kingdom of God cannot fail. Though its beginnings may appear insignificant, it grows and spreads until all things are made new. Let us trust in the power of the Gospel and labor faithfully in hope.
