Sermon 129 – The Coming of the Son of Man (Part 1)

📖 Sermon 129 – The Coming of the Son of Man (Part 1)

Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 17:20–25

Introduction

The Pharisees demand to know when the Kingdom of God will come. Jesus replies with a profound teaching: the Kingdom is already present in His person, yet His full revelation will come only after His suffering. This passage speaks both of inward grace and future glory.

I. The Kingdom Not Coming with Observation

A. The Pharisees sought visible signs
They expected political glory and outward display.

B. “The Kingdom of God cometh not with observation”
Its beginnings are spiritual, inward, unseen.

C. God's reign begins in the heart
Conversion is the entrance into the Kingdom.

II. “The Kingdom of God Is Within You”

A. A startling declaration
Not in temples, rituals, or political power — but in lives changed by grace.

B. The King Himself stands among them
Christ’s presence is the Kingdom’s presence.

C. The Pharisees failed to recognize Him
Spiritual blindness hides the very truth before them.

III. The Days of the Son of Man

A. Jesus speaks privately to His disciples
They will long for His presence.

B. Many false claims will arise
“See here… see there…” Deception will abound.

C. His coming will be unmistakable
“As the lightning… so shall the Son of Man be.” Sudden, visible, universal.

IV. The Necessary Suffering

A. “But first must He suffer many things”
The cross precedes the crown.

B. Rejection by His own generation
The King must die to bring His people into the Kingdom.

Conclusion

This first part reveals the Kingdom’s mystery: present yet future, inward yet coming in glory. Let us receive the King into our hearts now, that we may rejoice at His appearing.
