Sermon 130

Sermon 130 – The Coming of the Son of Man (Part 2)

📖 Sermon 130 – The Coming of the Son of Man (Part 2)

Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 17:26–37

Introduction

Jesus now describes the conditions surrounding His return. He draws parallels to the days of Noah and Lot — ordinary life, sudden judgment, and the need for readiness. This passage warns against worldliness and calls for watchful faith.

I. The Days of Noah

A. People were eating, drinking, marrying
Life proceeded as usual.

B. They ignored Noah’s warning
Unbelief continued until the very day the flood came.

C. “And destroyed them all”
Judgment was sudden and complete.

II. The Days of Lot

A. Eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building
Busy with worldly affairs.

B. The city was consumed in fire
Judgment fell without warning.

C. The lesson repeated
“Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.”

III. A Call to Urgency

A. “Let him not return back…”
Worldly attachments hinder salvation.

B. “Remember Lot’s wife”
A solemn warning against divided hearts.

C. Losing and saving life
“He that shall seek to save his life shall lose it…” The Gospel demands surrender.

IV. The Sudden Separation

A. Two in one bed — one taken, one left
External proximity does not guarantee shared destiny.

B. Two grinding together — one taken, one left
Christ’s return divides humanity.

C. Two in the field — one taken, one left
Judgment is individual and decisive.

V. The Disciples’ Question

A. “Where, Lord?”
They seek more detail.

B. Jesus replies, “Where the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.”
Judgment will fall wherever corruption is found. His coming will be unmistakable and sovereign.

Conclusion

The passage calls us to readiness. As in Noah’s and Lot’s days, many will be absorbed in earthly concerns, unprepared for the Lord’s appearing. Let us live soberly, hold this world lightly, and watch for the coming of the Son of Man.
