📖 Sermon 135 – Leaving All to Follow Christ

Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 18:28–30

Introduction

After hearing Jesus’ words about the difficulty of the rich entering the Kingdom of God, Peter speaks on behalf of the disciples: “We have left all and followed Thee.” Jesus responds with a promise full of comfort for all who sacrifice for His sake.

I. Peter’s Statement

A. “We have left all…”
Their nets, boats, occupations — their former lives.

B. “…and followed Thee”
Discipleship means attachment to Christ.

C. Peter’s concern
He wonders about the reward for such costly obedience.

II. Christ’s Gracious Promise

A. “There is no man…”
No disciple is forgotten.

B. “…that hath left house, parents, brethren, wife, or children…”
The Gospel may divide families and require deep sacrifice.

C. “…for the Kingdom of God’s sake”
Motives matter; sacrifice must be for Christ.

D. “Who shall not receive manifold more…”
God repays with overflowing spiritual riches.

E. “…in this present time”
The fellowship of believers, the joy of service, the peace of God.

F. “…and in the world to come life everlasting”
Eternal reward surpasses all earthly loss.

III. The Nature of Christian Sacrifice

A. It is not meritorious
We earn nothing by our loss.

B. It is fruit of love to Christ
We forsake all gladly for Him who saved us.

C. It is sustained by faith
Believers look for the promised reward.

Conclusion

Following Christ requires surrender — sometimes painful, always costly. But Christ promises a reward far beyond anything we give up. Let us follow Him wholeheartedly, trusting His word and looking for eternal life.
