📖 Sermon 136 – Christ Foretells His Suffering
Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 18:31–34
Introduction
Jesus takes the Twelve aside and reveals in detail what awaits Him at Jerusalem — betrayal, mockery, scourging, death, and resurrection on the third day. But the disciples do not understand. This passage teaches the necessity of the cross and the blindness of the natural heart.
A. “He took unto Him the twelve”
A solemn, intimate moment.
B. “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem”
He walks knowingly toward suffering.
C. “All things… shall be accomplished”
Prophecy must be fulfilled;
Christ’s death is divinely appointed.
A. Delivered to the Gentiles
Rejected by His own nation.
B. Mocked, spitefully entreated, and spitted on
The deepest humiliation.
C. Scourged and put to death
The Lamb of God offered for sin.
D. “The third day He shall rise again”
The triumph after the suffering.
A. “They understood none of these things”
Spiritual truth is hidden
from the unprepared heart.
B. “This saying was hid from them”
They expected a conquering Messiah,
not a suffering Servant.
C. “Neither knew they the things which were spoken”
Only after the resurrection
would they comprehend His words.
Conclusion
Christ went willingly to the cross, fulfilling all Scripture and securing salvation for His people. Let us behold His suffering with reverence, and believe His resurrection with joy. What the disciples once could not understand, the church now proclaims with certainty: Christ died, and rose again.
