📖 Sermon 150 – The Destruction of the Temple
Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 21:5–11
Introduction
As some admired the beauty of the temple and its costly stones, Jesus foretold its utter destruction. The disciples, astonished, ask when these things shall be. Christ replies by describing events that must precede the fall of Jerusalem and foreshadow the end of the age.
A. “There shall not be left one stone upon another”
A shocking prophecy —
the temple was the pride of the nation.
B. Fulfilled in A.D. 70
The Romans leveled it completely.
C. A reminder that no earthly glory is permanent
A. “Take heed that ye be not deceived”
False Christs and false prophets would arise.
B. “The time draweth near”
Impostors would claim to know the hour.
C. Follow not after them
Christ’s people must be grounded in truth.
A. Wars and commotions
But “be not terrified” —
such things must occur.
B. Nation rising against nation
Conflict and turmoil in the world.
C. Great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences
Nature itself shaken.
D. Fearful sights and great signs from heaven
Manifestations of divine judgment.
Conclusion
Christ teaches His disciples not to be shaken by earthly upheaval. Wars, disasters, and false prophets do not overthrow His kingdom. God remains in control, and His Word shall stand even when temples fall and nations tremble.
