📖 Sermon 152 – The Days of Vengeance
Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 21:20–24
Introduction
Jesus continues His prophecy of the fall of Jerusalem. He describes the day when armies will surround the city, and the wrath of God will be poured out in judgment. These words were literally fulfilled in A.D. 70, and they also foreshadow the final judgment.
A. “When ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies”
A visible, unmistakable warning.
B. Then know that “the desolation thereof is nigh”
Judgment is certain —
the time of mercy is past.
C. God often warns before He strikes
A. “Let them which are in Judea flee to the mountains”
Escape while there is time.
B. “Let not them that are in the midst depart out”
No hesitation — immediate obedience.
C. “These be the days of vengeance”
God vindicates His rejected prophets
and fulfills His Word.
A. “Woe unto them that are with child…”
Suffering falls heaviest
on the weakest.
B. “There shall be great distress in the land”
The horrors of famine, war,
and destruction.
C. “And wrath upon this people”
The result of persistent unbelief.
A. “They shall fall by the edge of the sword”
Many perished in the siege.
B. “Shall be led away captive into all nations”
A long dispersion begins.
C. “Jerusalem shall be trodden down
of the Gentiles”
A continuing humiliation
until God’s appointed time.
Conclusion
The fall of Jerusalem is a solemn reminder that rejecting Christ brings judgment. Yet it also calls the believer to watchfulness, obedience, and trust in God’s Word, for His warnings are mercy and His promises sure.
