Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 21:25–28
Introduction
Jesus now speaks not only of Jerusalem’s fall but of events that will characterize the close of the age. Signs in the heavens, distress among nations, fear gripping the hearts of men — and then the visible, glorious appearing of the Son of Man.
A. “There shall be signs in the sun”
A disturbance in the created order.
B. “And in the moon”
Heavenly bodies altered or darkened.
C. “And in the stars”
Cosmic upheavals reflecting divine judgment.
A. “Upon the earth distress of nations”
Political turmoil and global unrest.
B. “With perplexity”
Problems without solutions.
C. “The sea and the waves roaring”
Possibly literal storms,
or symbolic imagery of nations in turmoil.
A. “Men’s hearts failing them for fear”
Terror at the overwhelming events.
B. “For looking after those things
which are coming on the earth”
A sense of approaching doom.
C. “For the powers of heaven shall be shaken”
A universal trembling
before the King appears.
A. “Then shall they see…”
A visible, unmistakable revelation.
B. “…the Son of Man coming in a cloud
with power and great glory”
Majesty, judgment, and triumph.
C. The blessed hope of believers
What terrifies the world
brings joy to Christ’s people.
A. “When these things begin to come to pass…”
The signs stir holy expectation.
B. “Look up, and lift up your heads”
Not fear but confidence.
C. “For your redemption draweth nigh”
The King comes
to complete salvation for His own.
Conclusion
The world may tremble under signs and judgments, but the church looks upward with hope and joy. The coming of Christ is the believer’s redemption, the fulfillment of all promises, and the dawn of everlasting glory.
