Introduction

At the close of the Passover meal, Jesus gives new meaning to the bread and the cup. He institutes the Lord’s Supper — a memorial of His sacrifice, a proclamation of His death, and a seal of the new covenant established in His blood.

I. The Bread — His Body Given for Us

A. “He took bread…”
A common element invested with divine meaning.

B. “…and gave thanks”
Gratitude even as He faces the cross.

C. “This is My body which is given for you”
His life offered in substitution for sinners.

D. “This do in remembrance of Me”
A continual memorial of His saving work.

II. The Cup — The New Covenant in His Blood

A. “After supper He took the cup”
A deliberate, solemn act.

B. “This cup is the new testament in My blood”
A covenant sealed by His atoning sacrifice.

C. “Which is shed for you”
Personal, substitutionary, redemptive love.

III. The Meaning and Blessing of the Supper

A. A memorial of Christ’s death
We remember His sacrifice with grateful hearts.

B. A proclamation of the Gospel
“As often as ye eat… ye do show the Lord’s death.”

C. A communion with Christ
A spiritual feeding upon His grace.

D. A pledge of His return
The Supper looks back to the cross and forward to His coming.

Conclusion

The institution of the Lord’s Supper reveals the heart of the Gospel — Christ’s body given, His blood shed, a new covenant made for the salvation of His people. Let us draw near in faith, remembering Him until He comes.
