📖 Sermon 161 – True Greatness in Christ’s Kingdom
Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 22:24–30
Introduction
A painful scene unfolds at the Last Supper: a dispute among the disciples about which of them should be considered the greatest. Jesus gently corrects them, teaching the true nature of greatness in His kingdom: humble service, not earthly status.
A. “There was also a strife among them”
Even in sacred moments
the seeds of pride can arise.
B. They sought preeminence
A worldly mindset
brought into spiritual things.
C. Jesus uses the moment to teach them truth
A. “The kings of the Gentiles
exercise lordship over them”
Earthly greatness is marked
by dominance and authority.
B. “But ye shall not be so”
Christ’s kingdom operates
on opposite principles.
C. “He that is greatest among you,
let him be as the younger”
Greatness equals humility.
D. “And he that is chief,
as he that doth serve”
Greatness equals service.
A. “I am among you
as He that serveth”
The King of glory
stoops to serve His own.
B. True greatness is measured by likeness to Christ not by earthly recognition
A. “Ye are they
which have continued with Me
in My temptations”
Faithful perseverance
is valued by Christ.
B. “I appoint unto you a kingdom”
He shares His authority
with His faithful ones.
C. “Ye shall sit on thrones
judging the twelve tribes of Israel”
Present humility
will be rewarded
with future glory.
Conclusion
True greatness in Christ’s kingdom is not measured by position, prestige, or power, but by humility, love, and willingness to serve. Let us follow our Master, who came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many.
