📖 Sermon 160 – The Betrayer Revealed
Date: [no date given]
Text: Luke 22:21–23
Introduction
In the midst of the sacred meal instituting the Lord’s Supper, Jesus announces a shocking truth: one of His own disciples will betray Him. This solemn moment reveals the darkness of sin, the sovereignty of God, and the responsibility of man.
A. “But behold, the hand of him
that betrayeth Me
is with Me on the table”
The traitor is not an outsider —
he shares the meal.
B. Proximity does not equal holiness
Judas walked with Christ,
yet his heart remained unchanged.
C. Hypocrisy can sit at the table with the Savior
A. “Truly the Son of Man goeth…”
Christ moves toward the cross
in perfect submission
to the Father’s will.
B. “…as it was determined”
The betrayal fulfills Scripture —
God’s plan cannot be thwarted.
C. Christ is not a victim but the willing Redeemer
A. “But woe unto that man
by whom He is betrayed!”
Divine judgment rests
on the one who commits treachery.
B. God’s sovereignty
does not cancel human responsibility
Judas acts freely,
yet fulfills prophecy.
C. The horror of rejecting Christ after walking in His light
A. “They began to inquire among themselves”
A moment of self-examination.
B. “Which of them it was
that should do this thing?”
Even the faithful
search their own hearts.
C. A call to humility, vigilance, and dependence upon grace
Conclusion
The revelation of the betrayer teaches us the deceitfulness of sin, the certainty of God’s plan, and the need for constant watchfulness. Let us cling to Christ, examine our hearts, and pray for grace to remain faithful unto the end.
